I am a Pittsburgh-based freelance portrait artist. With artistic talent on both sides of my family, I could draw ever since I could hold a crayon. In 2004, I won an Honorable Mention and Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition in the Mike Doyle Art Competition. I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Art from Carlow University in 2008.

So I randomly received an email from Sidney Crosby’s cousin the other day regarding this portrait I gave to Sid 3.5 years ago! He said Sid felt bad about driving off so quickly, and that the family was impressed as Sid’s great uncle Owen was an artist for Marvel Comics! Very cool!

Lucky Mohawk
Penguin Winger Craig Adams. For this season’s playoffs, he shaved his hair into a mohawk for good luck.
Mike Rupp came out before Craig Adams at the Fan’s Summer Sports Jam, and I showed it to him. He liked the fact I chose to do a pic of his mohawk! Craig was the last Penguin of the day, so we had to stay the whole day to see him. After he signed my glossy, I handed it to him and he said “Thank you, very cool!” and then he showed it to the other people at the table who worked there.

Coach Disco
Pittsburgh Penguin head coach Dan Byslma, nicknamed “Disco Dan” because he enjoyed dancing in the clubhouse during his NHL career. Prior to coaching he played defense for the Los Angeles Kings and the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. On 2-15-09 he was promoted as Penguin interim head coach, the youngest coach in the NHL at the time, at age 38. He earned 40 points in his first 25 games as coach, leading the Pens to a Stanley Cup victory and becoming the only the 2nd mid-season replacement coach to win a Cup in their 1st season.
I started this during the Playoffs, then when the Pens were knocked out, I got sad and put it aside. Craig Adams was one of the first guys to be announced to appear at 93.7 The Fan’s Summer Sports Jam, but they just announced earlier in the week that Disco would be there too. I had to bust my tail to get this done in time, finalizing it at about 12:30 am last night!
Disco appeared for the “Coaches Corner,” a press conference with Ron Cook of the Post Gazette and Gregg Gianotti of the Fan with fans passing around a mic to anyone who wished to ask questions. When it was over I got up to try and grab him by the door before he snuck out. He talked to some guy first and then just stood there for a second so I reached over and handed it to him. He said, “Wow thank you, good job, it’s beautiful!”

You guys wanna see something funny?

My mom was looking for something last week and found this…it’s a drawing I did of Jagr and Mario. Judging from the diagonal jersey text, it must have been from their ‘92 season when I was only 6. It looks like I spelled Lemieux “Leumex” then someone tried writing over it with blue marker…and it’s still spelled wrong! I think I can draw Pens a little better now…just a bit. What do you think?
